Failed UPI transactions: T+1/T+5 auto-reversal and ₹100/day compensation

23 October 2026 · The Economic Times

Under the RBI's turnaround-time and customer compensation framework, failed UPI transfers must be auto-reversed within prescribed timelines, failing which compensation of ₹100 per day applies without the customer claiming it.

Points to Remember

  • Person-to-person UPI transfer debited from sender but not credited to beneficiary: auto-reversal within T+1 day if credit cannot be completed.
  • Merchant UPI payment debited but confirmation not received at merchant location: auto-reversal within T+5 days.
  • T = date of the transaction.
  • Delay beyond the deadline attracts compensation of ₹100 per day, credited automatically without a separate claim.
  • Customers can check transaction status, raise a dispute in the UPI app (keeping the ticket number), and then complain to the remitter bank; NPCI's UPI FAQs cover grievance raising through participating apps.

Why it matters

Failed UPI debits carry a defined refund clock and a ₹100/day penalty on the bank, so customers facing 'money debited, not credited' cases can be pointed to the TAT rule instead of being asked to wait indefinitely.
